Otto counts, "ONE for Lisa. There's only one of her!" "TWO for two emergency cookies", Lisa counts, "and THREE for the three most important days of the year: my birthday, your birthday, and Christmas!" Otto knows everything about the garden: how grass turns into compost, how whole trees grow out of the tiniest seed, and what color the bees' honey will be. "How many stars are there, do you think?" Lisa wants to know. "A thousand," says Otto, "or even more." "And what comes after a thousand?" "Thousand and one, thousand and two, thousand and three ... numbers never end." "And where do the numbers come from?" "I think they're just inside of us." Then Otto dies, and Lisa talks with him one more time about life and where things come from and what happens after this life. After Otto's death Lisa is sad and angry and feels like he has abandoned her. But then she understands that it's just like the numbers. He is still there for her, just inside her heart. And just like the numbers this will never end... |
