"Blackout" takes place in a tourist town on the North Sea. Marlon, Frieda, Benny and Birte, all between 15 and 17 years old, are a tight group. Ever since Birte secretly made a copy of the key to the boat house, the clique finally has a place they can meet and hang out. For the first-person narrator Birte, it's a dream come true when she meets up with the cool Marlon. That he breaks up with Frieda to be with her doesn't bother Birte much at all. After they get drunk together the first time, alcohol begins to play a larger and larger role among the teens. Karsten, a colleague of Marlon's from work, is already 18 and can provide plenty of hard liquor. As harmless as it might have seemed at the beginning, a culture of drunken excess quickly develops. The question of who can tolerate the most becomes a kind of sport. One of the consequences is that violence and awkward encounters among the group escalate. Finally the situation comes to a head: after yet another drunken binge, Frieda is raped while completely intoxicated. The clique breaks apart in the wake of this experience. Frieda is treated in a psychiatric hospital, while Birte makes her way back to normality after severe alcohol poisoning. The rapists land in juvenile prison. |
