"I felt in the depths of my heart a mysterious something that never let me doubt for a moment that sooner or later I would become the sovereign czarina of Russia." Catherine the Great 1762, Saint Petersburg. In a spectacular coup, Grand Duchess Catherine dethroned her husband, Peter III, and had herself proclaimed czarina. Who was this woman, whose obsession with power and sensuality has fascinated biographers for centuries? The perspectives of a nomad girl, a woman of the royal court, and a young cadet accompany Catherine on her way to power and paint an enthralling portrait of this exceptional ruler. |
