Content:
Riding a bike is awesome! Phil is very excited when he is given a real bicycle. "The bike is from Uncle Olli," Papa explains. "It's too small for his kids." Paula wants to sit on the bike right away. "But it's for me!" exclaims Phil. "That's right," Papa agrees. Phil sets himself on the seat. Paula yells, "I want to try, too!" "You can have my running bike," Phil replies. "I don't need it anymore." Paula runs to the training bike. She gets on and wants to ride away, but she keeps tipping over! Phil is sitting crooked on his new bike as well. "Wait a second, I'll adjust the seat for you," says Papa. Then Paula proudly puts on Phil's old helmet, because when you're going fast on a running bike, you need to wear a helmet. Papa shows her how to bend her legs and push with one leg and then the other. Then off she goes! And Phil? At first he rides the bike like his running bike, using his legs to scoot. Then he stops and tries to put his feet on the pedals. But when he wants to move, he and the bike fall over, and Phil starts crying in frustration. "You have it easier, Paula, you only have to walk. I have to ride," shouts Phil. But how does that work, riding, turning and braking? Phil tries and tries, but he keeps falling. It's a good thing he has Papa to explain how to put one foot on the pedal then push off the ground, and then how to pedal with energy. Papa watches him. Phil gets on again and again and pushes the pedal down once, then stops. Soon he pushes the other pedal down one time, too. Left, right, stop. Once he's mastered that, he sits on the bike and starts riding. "Super!" Papa and Paula clap excitedly. Papa explains to Phil how to brake and get off the bike. Phil practices going around curves, which isn't so easy! At first Phil is still quite nervous on the bike, but he keeps practicing and soon he rides like a pro. And Paula scoots after him on her running bike. When its starts to rain hard, that doesn't bother them a bit. Soon there are puddles everywhere. Paula is also getting really fast and goes right through one, with Phil close behind. Suddenly Paula's bike comes very close to Phil's, and they both fall over - right in the middle of a big puddle. With Paula and Phil, there is always something to laugh about.
